Getting Ready For Your New Website

Author: Guest Total views: 340 Word Count: 491

In this article we are going to discuss what you need to get ready for your new website. Although your web design company may handle these steps for you, it may be a good idea for you to handle this process on your own. Once you have completed the following, you can then hand over this information to your webmaster.

Setting up your domain name

Let's face it, most of the good domain names have been taken a long time ago. You may get lucky and find a good one that just expired or you business is so unique that the domain was never registered for example UncleTonysFishFry (dot) com. Don't let this discourage you. If you found a domain that you like that has already been registered, check it out. The domain may be not being used. Don't be afraid to contact the owner and make an offer, usually you can get a good domain from a seller for less than a 100 bucks.

I usually tell my clients to stay within the .com, .net and .org TLDs (Top-Level-Domains) to make it easier for their customers to remember. People never remember what extension a url is, they automatically assume it's a dot com!

Choosing an appropriate web host

Building a website on the wrong type of server is like building a home with those plastic hammers you had as a kid. Websites today are more dynamic than a few years ago, they may require certain addons or languages installed. If you have already chosen a web designer, ask him what requirements he needs in a host.

There are basically 2 major types of server setups: Linux And windows. Both are great for the applications they run but horrible if you try to run one on another for example:

A website built in PHP with mod-rewrite requires a Linux server where as a website built in ASP with Frontpage extensions is better on a windows server. When in doubt ask someone or do a little research.

Setting Up A Payment Processor

If you are going to be selling something or accepting payments for your business, you're going to need a payment processor. Which one will depend on the type of checkout setup you will have. First question to ask yourself, will my customers be entering their credit card information in to my website or handled on another website? For most of us, PayPal is sufficient. You simple add a button on your website and the customer is redirected to PayPal to make the final payment. On the other hand, if you want to handle the whole process on your site, a company like Authorize.net may be your best choice. If this is the route you want to go, they may require you purchasing an SSL certificate before you can accept payments. SSL certificates can usually be purchased where you bought your domain name. Godaddy.com is a good resource and their prices are reasonable.
