Link building is an important element in website ranking in major search engines. Why are links important? Every link indicating your site from another site is informing the search engine that a site feels your resource is useful thus it is an approval of your site. Right? Wrong. Not all votes are equal. Some votes are given more weight than the others. The basic factors affecting the value of a link are:

1. The Strength of the Site - The strength of the site pointing to your site is an important factor. For example, if a site with a PageRank 8 links to your site, the vote is given more consideration than a PageRank 3. Simply because Google sees more importance to PageRank 8 than rank 3.

2. Relevance. More than anything relevance is more important than a site's strength.

3. Anchor Text. The actual text used to link to your site is very important. In building site links, always include in the text keywords that link back and if anything, it should be in the exact phrase you seeking to rank for.

4. Position. The position of a link on a page and the number of other links on that have a great significance on the value of the link. A link on the footnote, for example, is not given more weight than a link at or near the top. These indicate to the visitor whether to click or not. From the perspective of the search engine, the more times a link appears on a page, the more weight that link is given.

The number of ways to build links is limited only by one's imagination. However here are some basic elements to every link building mode.

Articles - Being an expert in your field of endeavor, so share. Writing articles about your core topic may not be easy but it is rewarding not to mention fulfilling. Having completed it, you need to syndicate it. Submit your article to many publishers through submission services on the web.

Directory Submission. This is a mind-numbing and time-consuming work. Right directory submission must be manually done. Titles and specifications must be relevant to the directory where it will be submitted. There are directories that charge fees. Some do it for free.

Forum Posting. This may be a hit and miss tactic as some forums are strict. But if you are responding to forums with good advice, you might get good traffic indeed.
