Starting up an online business and becoming an internet marketer is very exciting. Just thinking about all those potential customers gives a good shot of tingles and goose bumps to the soon-to-be next internet millionaire! It is so alluring and tantalizing to imagine building an online empire, knowing that people all over the world will be buying your products 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. Imagine going to sleep at night, and waking up the following morning with more money in the bank account from your online sales that happened at night while you slept!

Who wouldn't want that wonderful life? Of course nearly everyone desires that lifestyle, and hence there is a tremendous number (and growing) of people getting an online business up and running, every single day.
With that in mind, here are 2 facts that are indisputable:
1) It is very easy to start an online business, and
2) the cost to do so is negligible. Compared with starting up other businesses in the brick and mortar, offline world, the idea of getting an internet business started fast and cheap seems just too good to be true.
Unfortunately, it is too good to be true. The 2 facts stated above can easily spell disaster for the aspiring internet marketer. Consider the following questions that must be addressed in order to have any chance of success at all:
- What exactly are you selling?
- Who else is selling this same thing?
- Who are you selling to?
- What do you/your product stand for?
- How will you stand out against a sea of endless competition?
Because of the 2 facts already stated (that it's easy to get an online business started, and at low-cost), it naturally invites and entices many to do it. What does that mean for you? It means you have increased competition every single day. Let's use a silly little example to make the point:
What if you opened up a lemonade stand on your busy street corner? If you were the only lemonade stand, on a hot day, and if your lemonade tasted great, and was reasonably priced, I'd bet you'd have a great sales day. You would probably sell until you ran out of ingredients, and could have sold even more. But what if you went out one morning to open up your lemonade stand, and you discover that there are 99 other lemonade stands up and running, one in front of every single house on both sides of the street? Then what would you do? I think it's safe to say that you're going to have a much harder time selling your lemonade.
Now consider that every single day, more and more people are getting a domain name, throwing something up on their new website, and announcing that they are "open for business." Will they sell anything? Probably not, but they did just add to the clutter and noise on the internet. And how does this impact you? Just what is your product, exactly, and how will it be different from the thousands of others already online, and getting online daily?
There are plenty of existing online marketers out there that are selling quick and easy solutions to getting an online business established. In fact, many of them are advocating that you don't even need to do any work or original thinking at all. Just become an affiliate, and sell their products. That's great, until you realize that every single person out that cannot just be an affiliate and sell someone else's product and hope to make money. It's certainly ok to become an affiliate, but even if you do become someone else's affiliate, you'll still need to determine how to break through the clutter and stand out, or you're destined to end up being just another "lemonade stand" on a street crowded with lemonade stands.
As another example, there are online marketers that will sell you their "system" to establish a "blog-based membership site" in just minutes, and they promise you that you can make money by selling memberships to your blog. Of course, after giving them your money, you'll get your blog membership site up and running very quickly (maybe), but it will look just like every other person's site who has done the same thing. Translation: No sales for you. The only "sale" that happened was you paying the person who sold you the incredible, unbelievable, "get rich quick online" system in the first place.
Yes, I hope I have your attention by now, because here's the one thing you MUST know and realize if you are going to have any chance of making money in your new online business: It is NOT easy. It is work. Yes, the internet, as a sales channel, has a lot of awesome upside and potential, but it requires effort and dedication on your part. And most importantly, in addition to having a great product at a great price, you'll need to learn how to stand out and break through the clutter out there, so that you have a chance of getting noticed.
Using the lemonade example from above, how do you get your little lemonade business to really stand out? The question itself is easy enough to answer, but implementing the answer requires effort and a focused plan.
Yes Trebek, for $100, the answer is: Create a brand.
